Parallel resonant circuit converter in thyristor technology

This type of converter represents the beginning of static converter technology. It is still very popular today for feeding crucible melting furnaces and is used up to high outputs.

In direct comparison to series resonant circuit converters, the main advantage is that the inverter carries almost only the active current.

12- and 24-pulse rectifier designs are used in high-performance converters to reduce the design-related line effects.

The power control takes place via phase control of the rectifier.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

  • Relatively good protection against load-side short circuits
  • High power can be achieved easily
  • Inverter carries almost only active current
  • Power control via phase control of the rectifier
  • High reactive power requirement during power reduced operation / turndown
  • Power sharing to several consumers possible, but subject to compromise
